To be completely honest, the Melbourne Cup and all things to do with horse racing have never really interested me The idea of 50's inspired outfits, beautiful hats and bouffant hair, however, have always had a spot in my heart. We were asked to do a fashion show with some of the regions most successful fashion houses - Tokunai Hair (who organised the fashions, hair and make-up), Sonlia, Karlie Jay, Cherry Tom and the successful boutique Twenty Four Clothing on the day of Melbourne Cup at the Shangri-La Hotel for their annual Melbourne Cup Luncheon. Our S/S11 collection was shown in two locations of the venue. We had a display of live models downstairs at Ba8 where there was a casual atmosphere, cocktails, music and a cute runway complete with faux green grass, lights and a white picket fence. Upstairs was a more formal setting. There was a runway, where the people sitting at their tables could view. The buffet that they had was delicious, ice-sculptures and all! The dessert tables featured an ice cream man who scooped you fresh ice cream and a pyramid of strawberries with chocolate fondue either side. Up until the horses started racing, the bidding began. The people got so energetic about which horses were doing what, we understood why people were so enthusiastic about this event! By the time the horses were racing, we were as into it as the people who had been watching the races all their life. Needless to say, the Melbourne Cup is definitely an enjoyable event.
